1. What is Emotional Compass?

 

Is an application for you to 'direct' the main emotions in life. With custom apps included:

  • Vietnameseized and developed by Compassio

  • Based on 'trust theories'

  • Easy application in practice

  • Can be used for group play with the included emoticon (Emocard)

2. Understanding Emotional Compass

 

The Structure of the Emotional Compass - Emotional Compass

  • Compass divided into 8 Major Emotions

  • 4 pairs of opposite emotions

  • Emotion level decreases from the center of the compass: Strong - Normal - Mild

  • Each emotion is close to each other, when combined create a new emotion

  • Each color represents an emotion throughout
     

8 major emotions developed based on survival purpose​

  • Sad - Happy Pairs : Appears in relation to 'things of value'. Sad to lose something, happy to receive something of value.

  • Pair of Fear - Anger : Appears according to the 'Fight-or-Fight' mechanism. Fear appears when fleeing to safety (turn), Anger appears when fighting to destroy obstacles (fight).

  • Pair of Expectations - Surprises : Appears when meeting 'what is expected to happen'. Expectation when encountering an expectation that has not yet happened. Surprised when the expected thing happened.

  • Trust - Disgusting Pair: Appears in relation to 'what can be trusted'. Trust when you encounter something you can trust. Disgusting to encounter something that cannot be trusted.

 

3. Emotions on the Compass

 

Fun

  • Activated When: Obtaining something of value

  • Function : Gather resources

  • Needs : Social interaction (connection)

  • Signal: Duchenne smile (upper lip corners, crease around outer corner of eyes)

  • Accompanying response : Seek more, sustain, shout, join/connect, indulge, indulge


Angry

  • Activated When: Encountering an obstacle, danger

  • Functions : Attacking obstacles, resisting

  • Need : "Get out of my way"

  • Signal: glaring eyes, lowered and furrowed brows, and pursed lips

  • Accompanying reactions : Arguing, insults, vandalism, verbal fighting, shouting/screaming, use of force, seething/brooding, passive aggression


Hideous

  • Triggered When: Encountering something unacceptable (food, morality)

  • Function : Eliminate poison, refuse to accept

  • Need : "Get rid of this"

  • Signal: stick out tongue, raise upper lip, wrinkle nose

  • Accompanying reactions : Retreat, stay away, vomiting, dehumanization


Surprised

  • Triggered When: There is an unexpected event

  • Function : Notify to need time to consider and orient

  • Need : Action in response to a sudden event

  • Signal: Forehead raised; The outer edge of the eyebrow is slightly raised - Eyes wide open

  • Accompanied reaction : Immediate action


Get upset

  • Activated When: Losing something of value

  • Function : Heal loss

  • Needs : Need comfort, care, healing

  • Signal: furrows eyebrows in the center of forehead, lifts cheeks and tears

  • Accompanying reactions : Seeking solace, withdrawing, mourning, protesting, feeling ashamed


Be afraid

  • Activated When: In danger, threat

  • Function : Run away, run away for safety

  • Needs : Help, protection

  • Signal: eyes wide open, lips stretched and raised, eyebrows drawn together

  • Accompanying reactions : Withdraw, move away, hesitate, freeze, yell/scream, ruminate, worry


Trust

  • Activated When: is a member of a (social) group, supported, belongs

  • Function : take care, support each other

  • Need : "Collaborate with me/ Associate with me/ Be my ally"

  • Signal: confident, steadfast, affectionate eyes looking directly at the opposite person, holding his head high

  • Responses : Making friendships or relationships, giving spiritual and material help, nurturing and strengthening relationships


Expected

  • Activated When: Encountering something new

  • Function : Promotes learning about new things

  • Need : Wanting to know what's going to happen

  • Signal: High cheekbones; slightly squinted eyes; dilated lip margins; slightly parted lips

  • Accompanying response : Gather a lot of information about the situation before making a decision
